Illustration & Design

I was an Industrial Designer/Illustrator for Shelcore Toys from 2002-2007. Their art department was small -- so I wound up doing A LOT! Since then, I've been a Freelance Contractor with toy company clients that include Fisher-Price, Spinmaster, Funrise, Rubies Costumes, and Sportcraft and haved worked on brands that include Disney, Sesame Street, Nickolodeon, Netflix, Marvel, and many others. Below is a sampling of my work -- including Concept Sketches, Renderings, Control Drawings, Label and Packaging Illustrations...and whatever else seems to fit.

The toy world has kept me busy.

"The Mighty Colossus" - a ship playset from Fisher-Price--Over 2ft. tall! Eventually the Strake monster figure in this rendering was replaced by Lord Fathom ( to the right...I drew him, too.)

"Shark Ship" from Fisher-Price. Eventually it was decided to make that shark figure into a costume for Dr. Undergear..and I wound up drawing a label for his face (with only a rough sketch of the character for reference since the fellow hadn't appeared on the show yet.)

"Land and Sea Whale Playset" from Fisher-Price. That robot Manta Ray disappeared somewhere along the production line.

These are a few of the labels I've made for Fisher-Price's Disney products.

A rendering for what eventually became the "Snap and Dress Hair Salon." The green hairdo didn't make the final cut.

This was a silly idea that wound up inspiring an entire product line of laughing monsters. THIS particular fellow didn't go anywhere, but I always liked him.

Image used on the packaging for the Shelcore Shake 'N Bobbles Pirate Ship. I believe this is my favorite thing I ever created at Shelcore.

The image used on the back of the original boxes for the Shake 'N Bobbles toy line. Very early...didn't know where the line was going.

The expanded view of the image for bigger boxes, featuring actual products and some fanciful ideas.

Yet another version, this one used on later boxes and as a mural for toy shows. Featuring some of the characters that would be used in...

This is a character sheet for a proposed animated cartoon based on the Shelcore Shake 'N Bobbles line of toys. (Look! An actual girl character! That NEVER happened in this line.)

A collection of some of the Shake 'N Bobble products I worked on. Some were produced, some were just blue sky ideas.

Here's a Control Drawing from the beginning of the Shake 'N Bobbles product line. This is from before the toys were first released, when the figures were attached to the vehicles. Okay, that's enough for the Shake 'N Bobbles...

These are a few of the Soft Products I helped design for Shelcore Toys.

While working at Shelcore, I'd occasionally work on licensed products (which means toys based on characters from TV, Film, and other media.) The Teletubbies are long gone, but I'm thrilled to see that Peppa Pig is alive and well on Nick Jr. (Snort!)

Photo/Illustration used on the back of the box for the Shelcore Bathtime Play Center. Lots of photo manipulation going on here -- that little girl is made of parts from three different kids!

A selection of labels from various Shelcore Toys.

When Shelcore Toys opened a chain of toy stores in China, these are the images you would see in malls as the stores were being built.

I've drawn a LOT of toddler toys...it's nice to shake things up occasionally. This handsome fellow was an early submission for a line of statuettes that interact with video games. (Skylanders? Haven't a clue. This was a long time ago.)

The "World" shot of the PlayWow Line of Core Characters. These guys wound up on most of the PlayWow Toy line.

...like some of these...

...and these! (All toy renderings by me.)

These illustrations were for a series of inflatable balls that appeared in Dollar Tree Stores across the USA.

This is an early color rendering for what became Hook's Battle Boat -- I think the only thing of mine to survive to the finished toy is the carved shark head on the front!

An early stage of development when they had a firing base.

This is an early Control Drawing for this product. The actual toy tweaked the tail-to-head connection and added the skull and crossbones to the light lens.

I've worked on a few renderings for Thomas and Friends Trackmaster Playsets (Fisher-Price). My job here was to take the rough track layout photographs sent to me by Fisher-Price designers and flesh them out into representations of what the finished toy would look like.

Hmm...this one got pretty close to the finished toy, but WOW are my colors drab!

This version of the Thomas Castle Quest playset is a long way from the finished product--and this is Rendering #10!
